Chevrolet and its kissing cousin GMC must be looking at the future. The 2008 model is on the horizon, but the redesigned 2007 models in GM's stable could still fill the wish list of savvy, price-conscious consumers.

The Chevy Silverado (2007 ICOTY Truck of the Year) and companion GMC Sierra have been the standard bearer of GM truck loyalists. But time and competition have a way of forging ahead. A look in the side view mirror shows Toyota in full gallop with its new full-size Tundra and Ford taking giant steps with next year's impressive lineup of new heavy duties.

As the all-new 2007 Silverado and Sierra prepare the drive toward the new decade, they boast some stalwart numbers: Four Classic engine configurations from the 4.3-liter V6 Vortec to the 6.0-liter Vortec V8, with three different Hydra-Matic four-speed transmission adaptions and one five-speed manual for the 1500. That series alone counts seven different variants from regular cab with standard box to the 1500 HD Crew Cab. The 2500 and 3500 Series Heavy Duty models go on up from there.

What does one get with a 2007 Silverado or Sierra besides impressive performance?

How about variety. A 1500 Hybrid Classic is an earth-friendly, fuel saver. The high performance Silverado SS Classic can dual with the best of them. A VortexMAX performance package with enhanced Heavy Duty towing boosts that capability on 1500 Series 4-wheel-drive models. (Count on many summer trips to the mountains with ATVs in tow.) For grunt-type duty, a Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 takes over. The Silverado Classic LT's Z71 package (four-wheel-drive only) adds gas-charged shocks, off-road jounce bumpers, skid pad, stabilizer bars, special decals and a high capacity air cleaner when a run down a dirt road kicks up dust.

Inside, depending on model, are a long list of staple goodies, from cruise control and power lock doors with keyless entry to leather wrapped steering wheel. On the Sierra side, the top-line Denali sports luxury touches and unique wheels in 17- and 20-inch sizes.

Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the best seller Silverado Classic 1500 is just under $18,000. (16/21 MPG). But that doesn't mean one couldn't try to barter.
