Subaru Forester

Although some people wouldn't consider this a proper SUV, both mechanically and effectively, it is just as much of an SUV as the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4. Take, for example, its 63.1 cubic feet of storage space with the rear seats folded, as well as standard full-time all-wheel drive-just like an SUV. Furthermore, while its seating position admittedly is not quite as high as that of the Nissan Xterra or Ford Escape, it is higher than that of passenger cars so as to afford you a commanding view of the road-again, just like an SUV.

The Forester's low profile and low-mounted location of its heaviest mechanical components give it a low center of gravity, which translates into truly car-like handling and a low risk of rollover next to most other SUVs. Power comes from a 165-HP four-cylinder engine, which does okay since the Forester is relatively light and delivers good fuel economy. Outward visibility is first rate, as are the ergonomics.

Offered in a rather base "L" model up to a comfy, leather-lined "S" model, the Forester can be equipped just the way you like it. And though it may not scream "SUV" in the traditional sense, it is all the SUV that most people need.
