 The
state of the pickup-truck art has certainly changed from
the days of the rusty old beaters our grandpas used to
chug from the farm to town and back. Why, with today’s
pickups styled and adorned as they are, no one would even
dream of goin’ dirtin’ in one of ‘em! Okay,
we still take ‘em dirtin,’ but nonetheless,
at American Woman Road and Travel, we call it progress.
So what if they’ve lost a little macho appeal? What
they’ve gained is all kinds of livability, and now
they’re even better at what pickups are built for
in the first place: hauling.
Furthermore,
this year has brought with it a virtual army of four-door
pickups, not just the kindwith two suicide-style mini-doors,
but four, full swear-on grampa’s-toolshed-true doors,
hinges in the front and all! Chevrolet’s S10 and GMC’s
Sonoma Crew Cab pickups, mechanical twins that they are,
earned our Most Athletic Award this year by not just adding
a couple of doors and some rear legroom, but by staying
true to the bang-for-the-buck, high value equation that
has made GM’s pickups favorites in RTM's eyes for years.
And to think that within a year or two, the S10 and Sonoma
are due for a complete redo, along the lines of the sensational
upcoming Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy SUVs—it’s
enough to make us salivate! In the meantime, this four-door
duo is still good enough to haul away our 2001 Most Athletic
Award, which should make it a winner in your book, too.
