Visit the State of Illinois

Visit Illinois

Chicago is such a well-known city worldwide that many people think that it's the name of the state instead of Illinois. Nicknamed the Windy City, not because it's windy but because of the history of bellowing politicians, Chicago is often considered the New York (only cleaner) of the Midwest.

Sitting on the lower east side of Illinois facing Lake Michigan, Chicago provides some of the most unique and interesting culture in America. But let's not forget that as popular as this American city is that there is plenty of more state in which it resides. Boasting one of the largest airports in the world, O'Hare International Airport is accessible to all the major freeways which get you quick access to most of the state and even some surrounding states.

While visiting Chicago, be sure to take a walk along famous Michigan Avenue, which offers some of the best shopping (as well as some of the best hotels and restaurants) in America.

Historical Notes: Illinois has had six capitol buildings since becoming a state. The first was a small two-story house in the town of Kakaskia that rented for $4 a day. The second, third and fourth capitols were in Vandalia. The fifth and the sixth (and present) capitol buildings are in Springfield.
