2003 Kia Model/Vehicle buyer's guide
by Phil Raby

2003 Kia Sorento
2003 Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento enters an already crowded segment packed with tough competitors, both domestic and foreign. But like all Kias, where the Sorento excels is in value for the money. With a base MSRP of just $19,995, this mid-sized SUV offers a whole lot of truck for very little cash.

And unlike many of its competitors, the Sorento is not simply an SUV body mated to an existing sedan frame. Instead, Kia opted for a body-on-frame design and a real 4-wheel-drive system to deliver a sturdier vehicle that isn't afraid of getting a little mud on its fenders. But despite this, the Sorento still delivers decent road manners and a pleasant ride that won't remind you of the last moving vehicle you rented.

Powering the Sorento is the same 3.5-liter V6 that can be found in Kia's minivan, the Sedona. It produces a satisfying 192 horsepower delivered through a 4-speed automatic transmission (the only transmission offered). Rear-wheel drive and two 4WD options are available. Mileage is better than average for vehicles of this size and regular fuel is recommended.

Standard features abound, including head protecting curtain side airbags, full-size spare tire, air conditioning, power doors and windows and mirrors, CD stereo with eight speakers, 60/40 split folding rear seatback and plenty of storage spaces. ABS, however, is optional.

Other vehicles in this category worth considering include the Toyota Highlander and Nissan Xterra. The Honda Pilot is also a worthy adversary but considerably more money.
