Truly domestic, unquestionably dramatic, the Chevrolet Corvette has acquired a wealth of honors as impressive as a collection of Academy Awards. With smashing good looks and an iron fisted control, it has an iconic allure that has morphed from a Harrison Ford to a George Clooney to a Justin Timberlake kind of temptation. It doesn't grow older. It just keeps getting better with time.

For those who can resist the pseudo sophistication of a Germanic or Asian nameplate, this is red-blooded American, with a kind of ripped T-shirt, smokey-eyed, deer-in-the headlights seduction that takes one's breath away. Indeed, watching — or driving — a Vette around a speed oval has to be nearly as good as ... Well, you fill in the blank.
The 2008 Vette is a refreshed version of Generation 6 and includes a number of updates led by an all-new LS3 6.2-liter small block V-8 engine, with a long list of technological advances. That includes a 190-mph top speed capability (tested on Germany's Autobahn) and optional two-mode performance exhaust for a sweeter sounding rumble and a couple more notches of horsepower. We'll note that the 430-horsepower, 424-lb ft. of torque, easier steering, and more supple manual shifter are all but
guaranteed
to leave skid marks across the memory of lesser sport car wannabes.
Inside, electronics rule, with such adds as keyless access remote, more responsive six-speed paddle shift automatic, iPod/MP3 for non-nav system models, and standard OnStar and XM Satellite radio. Custom leather-wrapped interiors include Linen or Sienna hues while new Tintcoat Metallics — Jetstream Blue and Crystal Red — add exterior splash.
The two-door, rear-drive Vette comes in Coupe or Convertible with 6.2-liter V-8 power and optional 251 performance suspension package. (7.0-liter, 505-HP V-8 powers a hot performance Z06.)
We commend the 16/26 best mileage for a full-fledged sports car and admire one that even in base-model can challenge competitors costing more than twice its $45 K entry price. For those who succumb, we recommend a cold shower after the initial test drive. |
