Sporty is as sporty does. And Infiniti's revived G35 sports sedan (and coupe), that first peaked out at the public at separate early 2006 auto shows, are finally ready to hold onto the title when the next gen models go on sale later this Fall.
The G35, no visual slouch in the past, is a bit purer, cleaner in line and more powerful for 2007 according to descriptions from company execs extolling its virtues. Subtle exterior changes lend a smoother, more flowing and aggressively athletic line in tune with Infiniti's updated direction. A lean, clean grille with fascia air scoops and cat-like headlamps add more pounce to the ounce. "Heart pumping" is a description its designers undoubtedly wouldn't mind hearing.
In addition to exterior changes, the new generation G35s from Nissan's luxury marque, feature a revised interior with subtle, white-and-violet "Fine Vision" gauge illumination. Textured aluminum trim shows a pattern called "Washi," reminiscent of traditional Japanese handmade paper. Nav system, sunroof, rear spoiler and interior wood trim add Premium Package luxury. An available audio boost provides surround sound richness for Sirius or XM satellite radio.
The rear-drive G35s get a power upgrade for '07, with Infiniti's VQ-series 3.5-liter V-6 now at the 300-plus horsepower level based on new SAE rating standards. While mated to a five-speed automatic as standard equipment, the sedan's Sport A/T version gets magnesium paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. The available total traction system offers "intelligent" all-wheel-drive for more grip, although G35s aren't known for being wishy-washy in the corners.
G35s have been Infiniti's most popular sellers, with entry level luxury prices designed to win rather than ward off customers. Pricing for the '07 versions, expected to be announced around October, is expected to maintain a low- to mid-$30,000 entry range comparable with some other sporty luxe models and well below other high-toned competitors. When G35 snuggles up to the gas pump, it wants only premium, please. On the road, the six-speed manual should deliver about 19/26 miles per gallon. Check out five, well-equipped sedan models for starters. Add drilled aluminum pedals, sport seats and other driver's touches by opting for AT trim.
