One thing's certain about vehicles wearing the famed Chevy bow tie. There's going to be more than a smattering of choices. That includes the midsize Trailblazer SUV. For 2007 it adds a hunky SS version to the fold, in case those who want more than sturdy capability, off-road talent, driving fun, handsome looks and solid performance don't have enough to keep them occupied. SS adds a serious level of sportscar playtime, with its Corvette-derived 395-horsepower, 6.0-liter V-8 hulking under the hood, sending this SUV from 0 to 60 in a scant 5.7 seconds. (Yes, this version is included in GM's just-announced, company-wide extended powertrain warranty that jumps coverage from three to five years.)

But regular production Trailblazers, in two- or four-wheel-drive, get enhancements for 2007 as well. Among updates are tire pressure monitors now standard on all editions. A regulated voltage control reduces engine load for better fuel economy. They'll have the latest, "Gen 7" version of GM's lofty OnStar security and communications system. And three new colors join the exterior palette: Imperial Blue, Graphite Metallic, and a tantalizing new metallic named "Moondust."

Standard powertrain is the 4.2-liter Vortec inline six, with a 191-horsepower rating. Gutsier power comes from the 5.3-liter, 302-HP Vortec V-8. Its Active Fuel Management regulates eight- and four-cylinder power for about a 5 percent fuel economy improvement, according to Chevy. (Expect about 16/22 best mileage for two wheel drive versions and 15/21 from FWD.)

Safety gets added attention for 2007, with GM's StabiliTrak that maintains control during sudden driving maneuvers now standard on all Trailblazer models. Passenger sensing, side curtain airbags and OnStar's Advanced Automatic Crash Notification, plus underlying steel frame side rail construction add security.

For those wanting amenities, there's a Sun, Sound and Entertainment package with power sunroof, rear seat DVD, XM Satellite Radio, Bose premium sound and six CD changer. Leather touches add luxury. Adjustable pedals and dealer installed running boards accommodate the petite.

About $25,440 can get one into a base Trailblazer. Add $9,840 to enter the SS realm.
