Toyota Camry
2003 Toyota Camry

In the quest to maintain its position as the best-selling mid-size sedan of the New Millennium, Toyota has made its popular Camry better than ever. We, of course, remember when the Camry was a chintzy little econobox. But oh, how things change. The ugly duckling of the Eighties is now quite the swan.

Camry is motivated by one of two engines, a 157-hp four-cylinder or a 192-hp V-6. Sure, scroll down the page a bit and you'll see some sedans from Honda, Nissan and Mazda that offer significantly more guts, but Toyota is unashamed of that deficit, maintaining that for most family duties, its engines offer plenty of guts. Besides, both manage to get excellent fuel economy: 25/33 for the four-cylinder, and 20/28 for the six.

Another point worth noting is that spending less money developing go-fast hardware allowed Toyota spend its dollars elsewhere-namely in making the Camry one of the most serene sedans in its class. Ride quality is composed and smooth, and noise from the engine, tires or wind is virtually undetectable. The better to hear your whining children with, right? Actually, we prefer to think of it as a sound chamber in which to listen to the Camry's incredible, optional JBL stereo with integrated in-dash 6-CD changer. Want a Navigation system? You could choose that, too. Either way, you will be in a spacious, quiet, ergonomically friendly machine that is easily one of the best sedans in the world.
