MERCURY NEW CAR MODEL GUIDE |
New
models in the 2006 line of Mercury,
from the Lincoln-Mercury Division of
Ford Motor Company, multiply with the
addition of two new nameplates. Milan
is a fresh mid-size sedan for Mercury
with premium equipment and two powertrain
choices, while Mariner the crossover
sport-utility vehicle spins off a gas-electric
version sporting the badge of Mariner
Hybrid.

Mercury
Grand Marquis |
With a long and broad body-on-frame
structure, V8 power and classic rear-wheel-drive
(RWD) traction, Grand Marquis carries
up to six adults and a load of luggage.
This Mercury has no rivals in the large-car
class, save for a twin, Ford's Crown
Victoria.
The
2006 editions reflect revised prow styling
with new grille, fascia and headlamps.
Mercury splits Grand Marquis into two
series of GS and LS, then adds packaged
equipment in further segments, such
as the Convenience array for GS or LS
Premium and LS Ultimate. The LS Ultimate
gets an air suspen-sion with rear stabilizer
bar, premium audio gear, remote controls
for audio and climate systems and a
steering wheel in wood and leather.
Beneath the extended hood, a single-cam
4.6-liter V8 achieves 224 hp in all
issues except with the optional handling
package on LS, where dual exhausts boost
output to 239 hp.

Grand Milan |
Newest nameplate at Mercury is a four-door
mid-size sedan that tucks in size beneath
Montego. Crisp body styling for Milan
incorporates Mercury design cues like
a waterfall grille and satin aluminum
finishes. In the five-place passenger
compartment, Milan brings two trim packages
with entry-issue Milan and upscale Premier.
Both stock preferred equipment like
air conditioning, driver-seat power
controls, remote keyless entry and deluxe
audio gear with CD/MP3 deck. Premier
adds leather upholstery, a six-disc
CD changer and anti-lock brake system
(ABS).
Milan
has two engine options -- a new aluminum
2.3-liter four-cylinder plant or optional
dual-cam 3.0-liter V6. The four-pack
produces 160 hp and links to a five-speed
manual transmission or five-speed automatic.
The 210-hp V6 uses a six-speed automatic
only. For added safety, an optional
package supplies side-impact air bags
plus curtain-style air bags, a perimeter
anti-theft system, ABS, power moonroof
and premium Audiophile sound system.

Mariner |
The compact SUV from Mercury comes with
premium equipment and optional V6 power
plus front-wheel-drive (FWD) or automatic
AWD traction. It's called a crossover
wagon because Mariner rides on a car's
platform and blends the manners of a
sedan with the elevated stance of a
SUV. Mariner looks rugged with a bold
face featuring a vertical grille in
satin aluminum and corner cluster headlamps
set above integrated foglamps. The upscale
cabin, with two rows of seats for five,
features woodgrain trim with bright
chrome and satin aluminum accents.
Mariner
divides into three equipment grades
- Convenience, Luxury and Premier, the
latter with luxury touches and leather
seats. A base 2.3-liter four-cylinder
engine makes 153 hp. The 3.0-liter V6
climbs to 200 hp and goes to Luxury
and Premier models. Mariner's new Moon
and Tune package adds a power moonroof
and premium audio equipment.

Mariner Hybrid |
Mercury's new hybrid electric vehicle
(HEV) off the Mariner crossover SUV
has a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine
aboard that drinks gasoline plus a battery-powered
electric motor. The electric plant can
propel the wagon or work with the gasoline
engine to deliver a power boost that
approximates the kick of a V6. An electronic
control module manages energy produced
by the two plants and sends it directly
to the front wheels -- or to all four
wheels for the optional AWD version
-- through an electronically controlled
CVT.
Fuel
economy figures rise to 33 mpg for running
on city streets. In the cabin the Mariner
Hybrid HEV applies satin-aluminum and
chrome trim to a layout with front bucket
seats and a back bench that folds to
enlarge the cargo bay. The Premium Package
has leather upholstery, heated seats,
a reverse sensing system, and curtain-style
side air bags. |
Mercury
Montego |
Mercury's premium sedan has the body
of a mid-size model but the cabin of
a big car with seats for five plus luxury
gear and an enormous trunk with large-car
capacity. Montego shares DNA with Ford's
Five Hundred, as the architecture for
both vehicles comes from Volvo with
a variable-size platform. Ford's Duratec
3.0-liter V6 engine fuels Montego with
203 hp and there are options for a continuously
variable transmission (CVT) from ZF-Batavia
or a six-speed automatic by Aisin. All-wheel-drive
(AWD) traction goes on Montego's list
of options, as do side air bags for
front seats and Ford's Safety Canopy
curtain-style air bags.
Mercury
splits Montego into two grades -- Premier
and Luxury. New options for '06 include
a backseat DVD video player, dashboard
navigation system and new paint shades
like Satellite Silver and Dark Blue
Pearl in Clearcoat Metallic. |
Mercury
Mountaineer |
Mid-size Mountaineer the Mercury SUV
returns in 2006 with fresh sheetmetal
styling, a revamped cabin with three
rows of seats, new powertrain selections
and more on-board amenities, such as
power-controlled running boards tucked
into rocker panels. Keen styling outside
features a bold face with Mercury's
signature waterfall grille, the bumper
in satin aluminum finish and fascia
with rectangular foglamps.
Mountaineer's
cabin make-over brings new designs for
seats, with fold-down benches on second
and third rows to form a flat cargo
floor. Premium cloth fabric is the standard
with leather optional. An enhanced 4.0-liter
V6 with five-speed automatic is the
stock powertrain, delivering 210 hp,
while a new 4.6-liter V8 is available
with 292 hp through a six-speed automatic.
Optional AWD models use Ford's Control
Trac system to automatically channel
engine torque to any wheel. The AWD
gear also includes Ford's AdvanceTrac
traction controller with Roll Stability
Control (RSC). |
Mercury
Monterey |
Mercury's long-wheelbase luxury minivan
wears a waterfall grille in front with
satin aluminum accents and flanks decked
with monochromatic cladding. Plan for
the cabin indicates three rows of seats
with twin buckets up front, seats on
the second row foldable and a third-tier
bench that drops into the floor. Power
for Monterey stems from a 4.2-liter
V6 engine rated at 201 hp and with enough
torque to lug a 3500-pound trailer.
Monterey
adopts a simplified trim strategy in
2006 with a single well-equipped model
called Monterey Luxury. It stocks power
controls for the driver's bucket, the
folding second-row seats and a fold-into-floor
third-row bench. Leather upholstery
with suede seat insets an d front seats
with internal heating-cooling elements
are available. Other options include
Ford's Safety Canopy curtain-style air
bags, a DVD-based video entertainment
system, power-adjustable pedals, tri-zone
cabin temperature controls and a power
liftgate. (...BACK) |
