Dining out with Fido

A Guide to Where to Eat With Your Pet

With record numbers of Americans traveling with their pets (over 20 million in 2004), so grows the demand for pet-friendly activities. What better activity than dining out?

"Dining out is a big part of any trip and pet traveling people don't want to leave their pet behind in the hotel room when they step out for dinner or drinks. Now they don't have to," commented Kim Salerno, president of TRIPS with PETS, a website that launched a directory of pet-friendly restaurants.

Although it is against health code to allow a pet inside of a dining establishment, many restaurants with outdoor seating would love to host you and your pet.

"I have turned away human customers since I opened my doors, but never a single pet," said one pet friendly restaurant owner.

Of course, it's very important that you follow proper pet etiquette when dining out. Always show consideration for other patrons: make sure your pet doesn't beg for food, bark or jump. Don't expect the wait staff to serve your pet — bring along their own travel bowls, food and water.

"If your pet is friendly, we are pet friendly," One restaurateur explained.
