TSA Bans Cigarette Lighters

Cigarette Lighters Prohibited in Checked, Carry-On Baggage

The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has added cigarette lighters to their list of Prohibited Items and, as of April 14, 2005, they may no longer be carried through an airport security checkpoint on your person or in a carry-on bag. No lighters will be sold in airport shops within the secure areas of an airport, and they may not be carried on board an aircraft.

Lighters have always been classified as hazardous materials and are prohibited in checked baggage.

What this means for you:

If you are a smoker, be sure to check all pockets of travel clothing and carry-on bags for stashed away lighters and remove them before leaving home. If screeners at the airport find lighters, they will confiscate and destroy them.

You are allowed to bring up to four books of matches beyond the security checkpoints either on your person or in a carry-on bag.
