Currency Exchange TipsCurrency Exchange Tips When Traveling

The Adventurous Wench provides these valuable tips for exchanging currency when traveling abroad:

  • Between the currency exchange at your US departure airport & the airport in your destination country, you'll usually get a better exchange rate at the destination.

  • It's nice to exchange at least a small amount in the US — enough to cover a taxi at your destination, in case you arrive when things are closed.

  • Avoid hassles at the airport.  You can order foreign currency online, and have it delivered to your door.  A couple of services for this are Travelex My Travel Wallet and Wells Fargo Foreign Exchange.

  • Credit cards are convenient for making foreign purchases, and usually give a good exchange rate.  Just check the fine print.  Some have started charging an extra 3 percent fee on foreign currency transactions.
