Escape to the Midwest of America
by
Suzanne Carmel

You don't need to plan an extended vacation to get away from it all this summer, nor will it take a trip to some exotic destination to find the perfect resort retreat. Centrally located in the United States, in the often-overlooked Midwest, you'll find many places to plan your getaway - whether for a long weekend or a week, whatever the occasion and with as many or as few family members as you choose. The following five resorts are among the best in their respective states, loaded with amenities and plenty of charm.

The American Club
Highland Drive
Kohler, WI 53044
800-344-2838
www.americanclub.com

Guests travel from near and far to stay at the American Club, located in the Village of Kohler, which became one of the first planned communities in the United States in 1917, under the impetus of Walter Kohler. The village contains many attractions for guests staying at the historic American Club, its nearby exclusive Carriage House and Kohler Waters Spa, or the more economical Inn on Woodlake. Visit the Kohler Design Center showcasing Kohler products, join a factory tour to learn how these plumbing products are made, or visit the Walderhaus - built in the architectural style of the ancestral home of the Kohler family.

The extensive Kohler grounds also contain three 18-hole golf courses, several parks with trails to walk and bike, eight places to drink and dine, the Sports Core Health and Fitness Facility, and the Shops at Woodlake. Guests have access to complimentary transportation to resort facilities.

Eagle Ridge Inn & Resort
444 Eagle Ridge Drive, Box 777
Galena, IL 61036
800-892-2269
www.eagleridge.com

It's easy to get lost on the grounds of the Eagle Ridge Inn & Resort, located a short drive from downtown historic Galena. The resort and facilities co-exist with private homes on the 6,800-acre Galena Territory, stretching on over rolling hills, woods and a secluded lake. It's the perfect place to get lost in your thoughts on a hike or while horseback riding.

Guest accommodations are at the main inn, or in privately owned Distinctive Homes or Resort Villas (booked through the main resort, offering hotel amenities and more). Practice your swing on one nine-hole and three 18-hole golf courses, or you can swim, bike, play tennis, fish, boat, enjoy the spa, and dine at four restaurants. The General Store rents out movies and sells provisions for home-cooked meals and anything else you might need during your stay. (
