for Holiday Traveling with Children
Don't
forget that children are not little adults. When traveling,
they need frequent breaks to eat, use the bathroom, stretch
their legs and keep their minds busy.
Additionally,
food is even more important when traveling with the kids.
Don't abandon your hopes for healthy eating, but be conservative
in their dining options. Picky eaters might need comfort
food to keep them eating and keep everyone happy.
Also,
don't fall into the late meal trap that many travelers do.
Be true to meal times to keep their stomachs (and the rest
of them) happy.
In-car
DVD players can be lifesavers to keep mom and dad sane during
a long trip, but be sure that it is a properly secured device-either
built in to the vehicle or an aftermarket product specifically
designed for in-car use. A TV resting loosely on the front
seats armrests can become a dangerous projectile in a crash
or sudden stop.
Old-fashioned
games work well, too. Sing-alongs, the license plate and
alphabet games, "I Spy", and travel-size board
and card games are all great traveling items.
If
there's just one child riding in the car and two adults,
the parents could take turns riding in the back with the
little one. This is a great way to make the child feel included
as well as a fantastic way to spend quality time with your
child.
Also,
don't sacrifice safety. Seat belts and car seats must be
used when traveling anywhere. It is not safe for anyone-child
or adult-to lie flat across the backseat of the car even
if they have his or her seat belt on. Seat belts must be
used and worn properly to ensure safety.
