Entry Level Car Buying Guide for 2008
by Martha Hindes
Seems many American families are bowing to some "B" words these days. That's B as in budget, or bypass, or maybe borrow. Gasoline prices hovering around the $3.00 a gallon mark can take a huge chunk out of budgets, causing folks to bypass "wishlist" things in order to prevent having to borrow just to get to work. Ouch. That kind of economy can hurt.
Well, enter another "B" classification, as in B class — or subcompact — vehicles. Those are the downsized "wheels" that can dart around with ease because of their diminutive size and sip fuel instead of gulping it down. Just when it looked impossible to find truly economical transportation for a fledgling budget, there are some well-styled, good-looking value cars to the rescue.
Automakers have responded to the fuel crunch by offering up some entry level vehicles in both subcompact and compact size that can claim miles-per-gallon numbers in the high 20s and 30s. Cost, on the other hand, can inch down into the mid to low teens for the price conscious.
With thoughtful scrutiny, RTM presents ten attractive — and downsized — vehicles that should banish boredom while pampering the battered budget.
