SAAB NEW CAR MODEL GUIDE
 Automaker Saab from Sweden, operating beneath the corporate umbrella of General Motors, for 2009 builds two different sizes of luxury and performance cars plus a sport utility vehicle (SUV). Flagship is the 9-5 series with a luxury sedan and SportCombi wagon. The 9-3 group — a sports sedan and premium convertible plus SportCombi wagon — gains traction with new XWD (cross-wheel-drive) technology available on the 9-3 2.0T Sport sedan and SportCombi. Saab's five-door SUV — labeled 9-7x — for 2009 offers three different powertrains that cap at 9-7x Aero stocking a 6.0-liter V8.

The luxurious flagship four-door sedan and five-door SportCombi wagon for Saab tote a 2.3-liter high-output turbo four-cylinder engine pumping 260 hp. Transmission is a tight manual five-speed or Saab's automatic Sentronic five-speed with steering wheel shift controls. The optional Aero package applies a sport-tuned chassis, sport seats and metallic cabin trim, while a Visibility package brings xenon headlamps and a rear parking assist (RPA) system. Standard cabin appointments include leather seat upholstery and a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel. The 2009 editions show new paint shades like Carbon Grey Metallic and Nocturne Blue Metallic.

Saab's mainline cars conform as a sports sedan, drop-top convertible and five-door SportCombi touring wagon. Models of 2009 vary with the option of XWD traction on 9-3 2.0T Sport sedan and SportCombi wagon. The XWD equipment is an active-on-demand system which engages only when needed on low-traction pavement. The 9-3 2.0T models pack a 2.0-liter four-in-line with turbo-charging booster to 210 hp, while 9-3 Aero carries a 2.8-liter V6 with water-cooled turbo-charging to rack up 280 hp. The 9-3 SportCombi wagon has two rows of seats for five plus a cargo bay and posh appointments.

Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity is now available on Saab's mid-size SUV. The wagon provides cushy leather-clad seats for five riders, with three powertrain choices but all-wheel-drive (AWD) traction on all issues. A smooth aerodynamic package projects Saab's three-port grille up front. Standard powertrain for 9-7x 4.2i is a 4.2-liter six-pack which makes 285 hp with a four-speed automatic transmission. The 9-7x 5.3i brings a 5.3-liter V8 primed to 300 hp and rigged with GM's Active Fuel Management (AFM) technology to conserve fuel. 9-7x Aero employs a 6.0-liter V8 pushing 390 hp through a heavy-duty four-speed automatic transmission.
