NEW HUMMER MODEL GUIDE |
The original H1 Hummer, a civilized version of the military High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or Hum-Vee, came from Hummer's parent company, AM General. But General Motors has marketing rights to the Hummer label and at GM's Hummer Division, junior versions have spawned from H1 Alpha. Hummer's '07 line encompasses the H2 SUV and SUT (sport-utility truck), plus reduced-size H3. Special editions work for both.

H2 SUV |
The H2 SUV seems like a smaller version of the original Hummer H1 Alpha. It rides on a modified version of the chassis of GM's Chevrolet Tahoe wagon, with similar mechanical components including a 6.0-liter V8 worth 325 hp. Every H2 stocks a Borg-Warner two-speed electronically controlled full-time 4WD system. The cabin has bolstered buckets and optional leather with high-tech audio and navigation gear. For 2007 a special edition appears in Glacier Blue body paint with carbon fiber accents in the cabin and special gear aboard like a rear-view camera and backseat DVD video entertainment kit.

H2 SUT |
This version of H2 functions as both wagon and truck. Where the SUV shows an extended roofline and boxed rear wagon bay, the SUT differs by lopping off the roof to form an abbreviated truck bed roughly four by three feet in size. Then the back wall of the cabin functions as a door -- it folds down and forms a generous extension of the truck box. A conventional cabin holds two buckets up front and a three-person bench in back. Add-on equipment extends from an expansive sunroof to XM satellite radio service.

H3 SUV |
The H3 SUV looks like a whittled and honed H2. It's a mid-size model one step down in size from the H2. For 2007 the H3 earns a new engine -- a 3.7-liter in-line-five that makes 242 hp through a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic. The electronically controlled 4WD system has a two-speed transfer case with locking differentials center and rear. For safety, StabiliTrak skid controls, OnStar telecommunications and curtain-style air bags are aboard. New model H3X looks custom with chrome tube steps, roof crossbows and a brush guard outside and a Monsoon sound system inside.
