The line of Buick, one of the oldest marques at General Motors, contains some of the newest nameplates at GM. Buick's 2007 models include two sedans -- Lucerne and LaCrosse -- and three different wagons -- Terraza, Rainier and Rendezvous.

Buick's grand-size sedan with front-wheel-drive (FWD) traction brings luxurious appointments and high-tech mechanical components like GM's Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) suspension and the StabiliTrak skid controls. Lucerne stocks a V6 or V8 engine, seats for five or six and innovations for safety and security. The cabin, engineered with Buick's QuietTuning measures for noise damping, contains fancy gear, either stock or optional, including a remote starter and rear parking assist (RPA), plus a Harman Kardon stereo with nine speakers and six-disc CD/MP3 player. Engine choices are a 3.8-liter V6 worth 197 hp or 4.6-liter V8 for 275 hp.

Buick's mid-size sedan feels like a well-heeled car with a plush ride quality, surprisingly quiet isolation for the passenger compartment and more than sufficient pedal power. The cabin offers seats for five or six. The six-seat version sets a bench for three in front of the three-place back bench, while a five-seat arrangement applies twin front buckets divided by a console with padded armrest. Two trims -- LaCrosse CX and elegant CXL -- pull power from a 3.8-liter V6 rated at 200 hp, while LaCrosse CXS stocks an aluminum 3.6-liter V6 spiked to 240 hp.

This CSV (crossover sport van) resembles a SUV but the big cabin with three tiers of seats for seven and side sliding doors works like a large-scale minivan. Seats on second and third rows may be removed to make room for more gear, or the back bench, split in half, folds on the seatback. Trims divide for traction mode of FWD or all-wheel-drive (AWD) with Terraza CXL FWD or CX AWD. Power flows from a 3.9-liter V6 with variable valve timing (VVT) for 240 hp. A FlexFuel version burning gasoline or E85 ethanol is due in 2007.

Buick's five-door SUV skews toward luxurious motoring with premium appointments aboard like leather upholstery. Rainier stocks a six-cylinder or V8 powertrain and rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or AWD traction. Standard plant is a 4.6-liter in-line-six with 291 hp. A 5.3-liter V8 employs GM's Active Fuel Management (AFM) technology to pare the number of cylinders engaged in the combustion process when boosted power is not needed. A Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) goes to all 2007 issues, and there are new paint chips on the color chart, such as Midnight Blue Metallic or Graphite Metallic.

Buick's other mid-size SUV combines attributes of both a car-based wagon and a minivan, then adds plush seats and an array of comfortable appointments. The cabin stocks up to three tiers of seats for six or seven riders plus rear cargo space. Trims change for 2007 to CX and CXL, each with FWD traction and a 3.5-liter V6 which achieves 196 hp. Standard safety equipment increases with four-wheel disc brakes, an anti-lock brake system (ABS) and RPA. The new entertainment options on Rendezvous range from XM satellite radio service to a backseat DVD video entertainment kit.
