Where to Workout During Long Layovers
Airports Offer Gyms to Workout on Layovers

by Dr. Jo Lichten

The more you travel, the more likely you are to find yourself stuck at an airport with a few hours to kill. Instead of just waiting for the weather to clear or for your flight to make it across the country, do something productive. A workout might be just what you need to work off some steam — and those French fries!

There's often a health club at the airport or within a couple of miles of it and most offer daily rates. Here's a guide to finding a gym near some of the most popular airports:

Atlanta (ATL) — Attractive Bodies Health & Fitness Club is a 5-minute ride away from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Chicago (ORD) — The Athletic Club at the Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport is accessible through underground tunnel.

Dallas (DFW) — Athletic and Tennis Club, Hilton Dallas-Fort Worth Lakes is 10 minutes away from the airport. Take a cab or Hilton shuttle. Irving Fitness is is also close by being 15 minutes away in the opposite direction.

Denver (DEN) — 1. World Gym is 15-20 minutes SW of Denver International Airport. The Stapleton Fitness Center in the Radisson Hotel is about 30 minutes west.

Detroit (DTW) — About 5-10 minutes away from Detroit Metro is Wayne Racquet & Exercise Club.

Houston (IAH) — A 15 minute taxi ride from Bush Intercontinental Airport, the Greenspoint Club is behind the Wyndham on the fifth floor of the parking garage. A free Wyndham Greenspoint shuttle is also available.

Los Angeles (LAX) — Walk the mile from Los Angeles International or take Hilton shuttle to 24 Hour Fitness/LAX Hilton

Las Vegas (LAS) — Located on the 2nd floor right above baggage claim at McCarran International is 24 Hour Fitness. Workout clothing (including shoes) is available for rent.

Miami (MIA) — Health Club at the Miami International Airport Hotel is located in Concourse E, 2nd level.

Minneapolis (MSP) — Appletree Fitness Center is 10 minutes away from Minneapolis-St. Paul International on 3rd floor of the Holiday Inn Select. Free shuttle available.

New York (JFK) — Holiday Inn John F. Kennedy Airport has a free shuttle and is about 10 minutes away.

Newark (EWK) — Airport Hilton is just across the highway from Newark Liberty International, but allow 10-15 minutes.

Orlando (MCO) — The World Gym is five to 10 minutes away from Orlando Interntaional Airport.
