Following South Beach Across the U.S.

Opt for active travel tours and stay fit while on the go

by Jessica Howell

More and more often, travelers are opting to "get away from it all" by immersing themselves in the midst of activity. No longer does a vacation mean relaxing at the beach or being pampered at the spa; in fact, 39 percent of recently surveyed travelers opted to partake in adventure activities this year, up from last year's 29 percent. And men, scoot over; more women plan to participate in outdoor activities during 2007 travel. Way to go, ladies!

When it comes to choosing a vacation destination, where should you go? First, consider your favorite activities. Are you a snow bunny? You'll likely want to hit the slopes in a cool city like Vail, Colorado or Jackson Hole, Wyoming. If warm, sunny weather is what gets you going, check out Arizona's Scottsdale area or head to one of California's southern beach towns.

Whatever climate you most prefer, there's a place within the states to perfectly suit your taste; it's simply a matter of blending budget and time constraints with fitness level. And remember: fitness levels are typically placed on every activity package available - these are here for your own safety and comfort. Never, ever commit to an excursion that jeporadizes your personal safety or that you may not feel comfortable participating in; it will only waste the time and money of both you and your instructor.

Below, we've compiled a list of some great active travel ideas within the U.S. that are definitely worthy of your attention.

Now is the ideal time to set annual fitness goals, so pack your bags, head out and get moving! Besides, travel is about opening your eyes and seeing the world - not hiding the comfy confines of a guestroom.

Kenai Peninsula, AK
Hike, pedal, paddle, float and walk your way through Alaska's Kenai Peninsula where vast mountains, abundant wildilfe and dazzling glaciers provide stunning scenery everywhere you turn. Backroad's Alaksa MultiSport trip is ideal for adventure-seekers and wraps the package up in a pleasant six days. Families that are interested should check out the Family Deluxe Camping and Family Casual Inns version of the trip.

San Diego, CA
California oufitter Hike Bike Kayak San Diego is the city's first and largest multi-sport tour operator offering year-round outdoor adventures like surfing, snorkeling, walking and those that are title-worthy as convenient weekend getaways. Special fitness vacations for families, singles, women and couples are available and include cool options like the Pedal & Paddle Family Special, La Jolla Plunge bike tour and 3-Day Adventure Camp.

Aspen, CO
Stretch it out in Aspen on Spafari's seven day getaway. Luxe accommodations, outdoor yoga classes, daily hikes, whitewater rafting and bike-riding are also on the itinerary, among other indulgent and cultural activities. If Aspen isn't your dream destination, check out their site where you'll find both international and U.S. options available.

Hudson River Valley, NY
Extensive trails wind through open farmland, mountain terrain, historic villages and mansions on Cross Country International's New York's Historic Hudson Valley tour. Stay in a quaint B&B during your five-night vacation, perfect to relax after a long day combing the countryside in your hiking boots.

Moab, UT
Adrift Adventures in Moab take guests outside of the city to experience life among the beauty of the red rocks. Two to five day trips are avialable for all ages and include expeditions of every sort. The Ultimate Moab Adventure Trip, for example, takes travelers on a Hummer safari trip, horseback ride, scenic flight and into the depths of Canyonlands National Park.
