Firstly, you should always be prepared to get down and dirty to give the car a thorough going over as this will reveal any obvious faults that would need fixing.  Check everything from the wheel arches to the engine.  Get in and press all the buttons you can find in the cabin, and adjust the seat to a comfortable position.  Basically, if you walk away without dirty hands, you haven’t had a good enough look.

Secondly, demand to see a full service history and all other relevant documentation.  This is paramount because it’ll let you see exactly what the vehicle has been through, as well as any faults that keep occurring.  You don’t want to get a car that needs a new set of headlights every month, or new door seals after every shower.  If there’s no paperwork, or you can’t find anything online, just walk away and save yourself the hassle.

Thirdly, take a test drive!  This is possibly the most important thing because you’ll be able to tell immediately if the car is for you or not; how it feels on the road is vital.  Look out for things like poor gears, loose steering or spongy brakes.  Also keep an ear out for any dodgy noises that come from the engine.  Remember, you’re the one who’ll be driving it every day, so make sure everything is right the first time.
