Comfort – Are the seats comfortable? Can you adjust the driver’s seat to the height you need? Is the steering wheel adjustable? Choose a car with seats you’re comfortable in for at least a 30-45 minute drive.
Ease of Use – Check to see how easy the gauges are to read, and if you can easily use the controls on the dashboard without taking your eyes off the road. Check all controls, such as the air conditioning, heat, headlights, and windshield wipers.
Handling – How does the car handle as you drive? Greenberg also recommends asking your sales person to bring out the exact model you want when you’re ready to test drive. Or, if you plan on buying a used car the dealership doesn’t have in stock, request to drive the same models that are a year older and newer to compare. You get a better overall feel for the car you’d be buying – whether it includes a sunroof, automatic or manual transmission, leather interior, etc.

When test driving the car, take it out on a variety of roads – don’t settle for a quick drive down the street. If you do a lot of highway driving, test drive the car on a highway. Also, take the car on a bumpy road to put its handling to the test. Finally, don’t be afraid of test driving the car in inclement weather. According to Greenberg, this is one of the best times to test drive so you can see how the car will handle in conditions, such as snow. He also recommends all eligible drivers in your household test drive the car to ensure they’re comfortable with it.
